Woman Asks Shelter For Oldest, Most Overlooked Dog Shelter Workers Left Lost For Words

Woman Asks Shelter For Oldest, Most Overlooked Dog. Shelter Workers Left Lost For Words.
This doesn’t happen every day, in fact, it’s almost unheard of. A woman looking for a dog at a shelter opted for an entirely different approach to all the regular adopters.
And on July 24th, all the staff at Asheville Humane Society Adoption Center would shed tears of joy when Leslie Sacks came along.
Leslie had an unusual request. She would ask the shelter to see the oldest dog they had — even if it had medical conditions.
She was adamant that she wanted the dog that had been passed over for adoption time and time again, for any and all reasons. But what did Leslie do that was so unprecedented?

I’m currently looking after (and will refuse to return) my sisters dog. Poor girl is 11, was only walked when my other sister could do it. Only feed human food and never played with and would always try jumping in your car the second you opened the door because she didn’t want to be left alone/ be there.

She is now a very happy girl and I can now get in my car to leave for work with out her jumping in.

Don’t surrender your dogs when they’re old. You will get old too, and someone can also surrender to you a senior care home or a mental facility

Senior dogs are the gifts that keep on giving. My baby girl was adopted at 10 in horrible shape and terribly depressed from her former abuse and pos owner who kept breeding her! Now she is so happy and in such amazing shape. The day we met I could tell her whole demeanor shifted and she knew I was taking her home forever 💗💗💗 I went there after I got the green light to foster her but she truly chose me

When I went to adopt my first Greyhound, I just asked who needed a home the most. I got Karen, who was a return after being in a home for 1 1/2 years. She was a character, but I loved her to pieces. I got my 2nd Grey just 2 months later. Truly wonderful dogs. 😘🐕💖🐕😍

What a beautiful story, God bless this woman and her family, their generous hearts and their love will be so meaningful to these dogs who have led difficult lives. I’ve always told my family that if we hit the lottery, I’d adopt as many dogs as possible who are in need of a loving home.

I understand why she did this.

  25. kyanshi on December 8, 2021 at 11:50 am

Thank you for giving them a home, even if it’s only for a short while. So many dogs go unadopted and end up in fospice, it breaks my heart to see them go unwanted. i wish I could open my home like this but between the rough and tumble kids that come here and my elderly mom who is a high fall risk, I can’t do as much as I want to do. I try to make up my lack of fostering ability by volunteering at our shelter, it just never feels like it’s enough

  26. Robert Gauthier on December 8, 2021 at 11:50 am

    I admire people like her

I grew up on a farm. Our dog is always catching a horse or a truck or a car. My dad used to go to the pound and simply ask, who’s up next?
Whatever dog was next for euthanasia he brought home. And that was never a bad move. He came home with a Dachshund one time that protected our farm like a Rottweiler would.

OMG!! Leslie is soo sweet!! When my dog passed away, my parents took us to the shelter and we got two dogs out of five! They were all so adorable and amazing to our family while we were playing with them! I made sure befor we left that all of them would find homes! After 2 weeks my mom told me the shelter workers said that all of the puppies had found a home!!!🥰🥰🥰

In Atlanta there was a program to match senior dogs with senior citizens. A local dog food manufacture provided free food or vouchers for PetSmart. It was called Silver Paws and it saved many an old dog. I love this progrM and would love to see more cities adopt it.

It encourages seniors to get out and walk, gives many who are alone company and a feeling of being loved (and we all need that) keeps d sweet dogs from being euthanized for mo good reason.

We are elderly and last year our elderly dog passed. He was a rescue.
So 6 months later ww asked the dog rescue if they had an eldery dog who’s owner had passed. We were told they had an elderly bonded pair whose person had just passed from cancer. We took them both since they were bonded. One just passed last month and is now with her life long person. And the serviving dog is getting lots of love.

that ladys hot for that. especially respecting to change our human behavior, cause humans create their own stereotypes and it doesn’t help anybody feel like they have control over their lives, so what do they do when they feel that way, they want to take over the world hence how today is.

  42. Atharva Toskar on December 8, 2021 at 12:10 pm

if shelter can euthanized healthy dogs then why not dogs owner can by using a humane stunner by their own?
