When Stroke Strikes Young
Healthy and active Barbie Diaz suffered a stroke at age 18 while driving on Gainesville’s Archer Road, causing her to hit a car. Diaz was immediately in the care of the UF Stroke Program team and physicians within UF’s neurosciences who diagnosed Diaz with a rare disease called Takayasu’s arteritis. She is healthy at age 20.

I’m 25, in November last year I also had a stroke caused by my heart condition. Went back to the neurologist today and he says my MRI shows white matter.. I will need heart surgery soon. Thank you for inspiring me.

I can’t imagine how scared you were at 18 to have such a serious stroke and I’m glad your okay. I know at 29 I was scared when I had one, but I just can’t imagine. I wish you the best of luck and health.
