Run for your life! At a comfortable pace, and not too far: James O'Keefe at TEDxUMKC
“The fitness patterns for conferring longevity and robust lifelong cardiovascular health are distinctly different from the patterns that develop peak performance and marathon/superhuman endurance. Extreme endurance training and racing can take a toll on your long-term cardiovascular health. For the daily workout, it may be best to have more fun endure less suffering in order to attain ideal heart health.”
Dr. James O’Keefe Jr. is the director of Preventative Cardiology Fellowship Program and the Director of Preventative Cardiology at Cardiovascular Consultants at the Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute, a large cardiology practice in Kansas City. He is the co-author of four bestselling books including The Forever Young Diet & Lifestyle (Andrews McMeel Publishing LLC, 2005). In 1989, he became a professor of medicine at the University of Missouri – Kansas City and has contributed to over 200 articles in medical literature. He is also the chief medical officer and founder of Cardiotabs, a company that creates nutritional supplements to aid in a healthy lifestyle.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.*

probably , this video is one of the greatest from TEDx Talks. Thank you guys.Thank you Doctor.
So glad I bumped into this video. I was overdoing it and felt so. The video explained it and now I’ve cut down long distance/time running. From five 10k runs I only for between 2 to 3 5k runs per week , at a more moderate pace. Also , I’ve incorporated HIIT training which feels very good indeed.

Great information
This is very interesting. I wonder if there have been any studies like this one between meat eaters and Vegans (whole foods, plant-based diet).

Well here we are a year later and I was wondering if you got your Harley ?(your other vid)
I’m doing 5k runs averaging in 28 minutes, every 2nd day. In between I might do shorter runs, or ride a bike… Is that cool?
Thank you for sharing this alpha information i’m really appreciated it
Americans are all about this OR that
No balance, no common sense. Totally myopic.
I’m watching this, during a forced recovery day, after running too many miles the past couple weeks, and getting sore and run down. This will help me not feel too guilty over taking a rest day.
David Goggins disagrees
running too many marathons SCAR the hearth,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I ran 26 marathons,,,,,,,,,,,
Long ago Buddha suggested not to go extreme. Too much eating and not eating, too much sleeping and not sleeping… Just like a string musical instrument, too tension can break the strings and not tensed strings can’t make musics, similar our life should be fine tuned, and this fine tune comes from practice and intuition, science can give extra flavor.
Human beings are a endurance species. We are designed naturally to do long distances walking. The only difference is that in modern diets, we fail to consume proper anti oxidants and fiber. Short chain fatty acids are not produced in adequate amounts by the gut bacteria since lack of fiber is their food… so they die off.
The reason you see long distance athletes passing away isn’t because these athletes are moving too much, it’s because failure to consume anti oxidants and fiber sufficient to reduce harm after exercise.
These athletes have been convinced that high meat diets actually improve their health, in reality, it does the opposite.
The “hit” and damage post exercise grows as there isn’t sufficient anti inflammatory compounds to prevent damage.
You don’t see these damaging results in those consuming sufficient anti oxidants
9 years late but that was one of the most informative TED talks I’ve listened to. Thank you very much Doc!
excellent – both physical and emotionally mindful exercises.
excellent presentation and content
I have a few 1950 ford tractors . The one plowing all day wear out quickly. The one that turns on doesn’t plow just cut grass are tip top. The one that goes nowhere is rusted hard to start.
Great talk, eye opening. I will verify all the sources first before changing my regimen however there is no mention of strength training..?
The entire universe is constantly moving and expanding. When you stop moving like the universe does, you collapse. So, decide!
Marathon running is necessary for elite military. Should be done by a young person at least once in life (ego). Jog(warm up) and then high intensity sprints. Push ups and pullups and resistance weight training. I practice Moy’s specialized tai chi in mornings (Taoist Tai Chi, Canadian Tai Chi Academy).
RUNNING 7 days a week IS BAD ???
Why did I just find out about it today 😭 what a waste I didn’t get any benefit. Just run a mile a day tho 🤷
Interesting Ted talk! I don’t get the criticism that it was rambling. It went into details, and he told stories, which made it interesting. Good listen!
First I liked what he said. CLose to the end of this video I understood how dangerous human he is.
This is frightening. It has me rethinking my training plan for my upcoming marathon.
When it comes to heart health, you can’t just look at diet, exercise, alcohol consumption, smoking…as the risk factors, heart health is much more complex than that…don’t forget about emotion, how we feel …our feelings and emotions play a huge roll in heart health. Don’t just look at data that doesn’t show the whole picture of someone’s life… if you love running and it brings you so much joy… it is good for you, if you are forcing it to get fit… then you might want to find something else that you can enjoy doing.
I run 50-80 miles per week. I guess I’m f*cked according to his haha!
i wonder if caffeine has a part to do with it? i know a lot of runners to take it to enhance their runs. i had some issues until I got off it, though was probably taking too much. still running now but zero caffeine.
"survival of the fittest" meant "whatever is most fit for an environment will survivor"; which is still inaccurate because really the thing that survives is that which can adapt to a changing environment.

I disliked that the doctor started with individual accounts of heart attacks. He starts with Phidippides, who actually ran 2 marathons that day. As a doctor myself, we call this persuading by fear. As the Running News editor asked, Where are all the bodies? Vigorous exercise did offer more mortality protection than a lower level of exercise, but it wasn’t quantified for us. It seems Iikely from recent reports that the "no pain, no gain" approach to long distance sports may be the culprit. It appears that using the MAF method of training, which keeps people mainly within their aerobic capacity, doesn’t cause the same stress on the heart, and that even marathons can be approached safely. At the end, there were still no guidelines as to how to get the best, safest results for exercise. This talk discouraged me from running for years until I re-watched it. Now I’ve gone back to running, but I’ll also have my heart evaluated periodically to assess how it’s tolerating my own prescription.
Mind me he is a Cardiologist that has been a runner……
what about footballers?
Man, people really should stop talking about myths as scientific proof. Pheidippides, according to history didn’t run from Maraton to Athens, 42km, he ran from Athens to Sparta in 36 hours, 245km.
And if you want to stop, prevent or reverse heart disease the place to start is a whole food plant based diet. Google "doctor Caldwell Esselstyn".
The run killa
I’ve been training my whole life. I agree with the 40-60 minute Mark.
Awesome presentation
6:45 – 6mph is actually a 10 minute pace…
What an amazing informative video superb 👏 👌
An extremely important ted talk for fitness freaks . A real eye opener . Thank you doctor.
This is in China. Maybe the horrible pollution they are breathing during exercise contributed a little.
Just slow down your pace. Run at the lowest BPM you can achieve while still running.
