From this and other experiences, and this type of situation in particular when you can only hear someone’s voice, it appears that a reliable sign of a stroke is someone not being able to enunciate clearly but not apparently being aware of that.
That was awful to listen too.. I can’t imagine how she felt after the fact.. Some of the pilots were being rude when there was obviously something wrong.. You don’t get to work Vegas tower if you were incompetent.. Glad no accidents happened and that she recovered!
I had transient ischemic attacks [mini strokes] due to a condition that would result in having part of my skull and vertebrae removed to decompress my cerebellum and brainstem. It is terrifying when you lose a faculty for no discernable reason or half your body’s coordination. I feel so bad for her, because she should be eating a couple aspirin and riding an ambulance, not shuffling expensive aluminum people tubes with wings.
I can’t believe they only have one on duty in such a critical job. That could result in hundreds of deaths, just to save a few bucks. I’m never flying again.
I mean….she had controls of the tower for at least 3-4 planes. That are easily 800 souls total with 200 souls per plane. And she pushed on giving weird info while having a stroke ? I am missing something or she is irresponsible.
Dear God that’s one hell of a long 10 minutes to listen to 😳
I hope those cockpit crews did find out that she’d had a stroke and wasn’t just drunk or something!
Was there ever an "official" report on this? I’ve read that she had a stroke as well as some reports that she was drunk and was on probation from a previous DUI.
My wife had a stroke at the kitchen table. When I walked in her speech was similar to the one we are listening to. I knew what to do–call an ambulance and keep her airway clear!! The ER saved her life and she recovered. Lesson: Early on someone should have asked "Yes or no, are you OK." Unless the answer was clear, that was the time to call some other frequency or phone number! Nine minutes to solve the puzzle! For shame.
"The FAA has since ordered two controllers to be in the tower during most hours at McCarran, which ranks among the 10 busiest airports in the U.S. in passenger volume."
So idk if this is public knowledge or not but she DID NOT have a stroke contrary to popular belief … she got BEYOND HAMMERED on duty when she first got to work. Not sure why exactly but apparently she had issues w alcohol. Alcoholism is a real problem in aviation sadly. She no longer works for the FAA.
This is a good example of why the HIMS medical program exists.
I don’t understand. I can’t work alone in an industrial power electronics lab, but if I get incapacitated, I’m the only one to get burned alive. Yet somehow ATC can work solo?

Uncontrolled airport terminology SUCKED!
that was painful to listen to… I hope she’s ok
No aistance. No supervisor in the shift?
This was so distressing to hear.
You can’t put up a video like this without explaining if the poor woman was ultimately ok or not. Just saying!!!!
Wow
I’m really not a fan of how we communicate with planes seems primitive
It took over 12 minutes for someone to realize at ATC that a controller is incapacitated at a major airport! Where was the supervisor?
Allegedly she was a drunk. Makes sense that the FAA would say she had a stroke if that was the case.

448 was the only pilot who took command. Kudos.
how did no one realize there was something wrong?
Thank God the pilots were switched on, if not for them anything could of happened.

poor lady.. i hope she recovered
The Spirit guys at least try to do something about the situation. Well done!

This whole thing sounded like any Biden speech….God help us all.
11:09 *Audible concern*

That’s horrifying. Hope she’s ok.
Y’all know she wasn’t having a stroke right? She was drunk off her ass.
Lmao you know something’s wrong when spirit takes the initiative to check
I live in las vegas, i remember when this was on the news, poor woman.
It was not a stroke and she no longer works for the FAA.
Can’t understand why it s no 1 in the town noticed.
She tried to stay on task all the way through. Hopefully she has recovered her health.
Did this woman recover??
Dear God that’s one hell of a long 10 minutes to listen to 😳

To the Pilots who called it, shout out and to the comradeship to take control when they weren’t sure and go with unmanned was reassuring.

6:53 Someone had to ask at some point 😬
1:25 subtitle is wrong. Should read "is there somebody up there that knows what they’re doing" instead of "It’s a comedy up there".
12:57 He says "its getting there" not "its good now"
Man, the last like minute before the hot mic and during the hot mic hearing her struggle was tough to listen to. I hope she’s doing better now
You mean they only have one person on duty?
Strokes fucking suck. No experience here thank God, but wow.

Holy fuck how on earth is there not a 2 person minimum in the tower???? Well my fear of flying just got worse for new reasons
Don’t do drugs at work
She can kind of handle multiple planes at a time while having a stroke… I cant handle 2 different while being completely healthy. Thats amazing!

with the big airport like that, you think they would have more a one ATC in the tower?

It should be an FAA rule that any airport where commercial flights are taking place there should be a minimum of two ATC on duty.
why were you guys breaking up
The Hot Mike is chilling…..
