It Was The Stultifying 1950s That Provoked The 1960s Rebellions

To support my efforts to create more clips please donate to me at I am very proud of the TV series I made for PBS called Making Sense of the Sixties. I had the chance to spend a year examining my youth and how I became an active member of the 60s generation. If you are from that generation or a child of the 60s, I think you would find the entire series of value. To see my other work visit

What I got out of angry emotions is that you shouldn’t let other people influence how you feel. If you are in a good mood than toxic people will just bring you down. Not sure if thats good or bad advice

  2. C. R. on September 14, 2021 at 9:27 pm

It’s strange to think that people interviewed in this video are now likely in their early to mid-70s. Weird how fast time goes by.

I applaud you, Mr. Hoffman. Absolutely an amazing documentary. I wish it didn’t end

Texas just took a giant leap back. This is the era of GenXers and Millennials. Not getting off to a very good start kids. In 30 years you’re going to get blamed.

  5. Jay Poole on September 14, 2021 at 9:30 pm

Wow! This documentary came to the same conclusions I, as a Millennial, came to when trying to understand my parents and grand-parents generation and how it has affected me. This would have saved me many hours of thinking, but I guess it wasn’t in vain. At least I know I’m not the only one who came tot his conclusion.

This first came out in 1990.

How is it that the children born in the 50s where so stupid, they never understood the affects the war and depression had on their parents? And how is it, that after being ignorantly recruited into the cult of counter culture, and subsequently realizing how unproductive it was, ignorantly allowed themselves to be recruited into the cults of religion and academia? And then turn around and try to pretend to parent like their parents, and not speak of their past? The 60s produced the most hypocritical brain dead generation, so lazy and thoughtless, they screwed over their generation of children worse than any before it. Culture has regressed because of the brainwashed retards involved in the psychological military operation known as the 60s.

My mom in the 60’s was in the convent and did none of that,,she was about to take her vows and she met my handsome army officer father who also wasn’t into any of that,,and they got married,,,neither of my parents were hippies , they were no drugs , no drinking and my dad and mom never even smoked a cigarette,,,I love them good mom thought they the hippies were wasting their life,,,and my dad knew they hated army men so he never gave them the time of day to busy with his career…i was lucky very lucky….

  9. ParagonRex on September 14, 2021 at 9:36 pm

The 50s were not stultifying, the 50s created a calmness and a conformity that this nation needed, and had it remained we would have had none of the chaos caused by the 60s. And as a consequence would not be suffering the maladies we are now. "Hard times created good men, Good men created good times, Good times create weak men, Weak men create hard times."

  12. Alberto Schiavo on September 14, 2021 at 9:40 pm

there still is conformism today but not because of conservative society but because of capitalism/consumerism (the commercials tell us what we should do)

  13. Jennifer Wilcox on September 14, 2021 at 9:40 pm

Why, oh, why, do so many people (even to this day) center on how many kids one has and what kind of job one has? Anyone can reproduce. It’s not a big achievement.

Young men at 18, were forced to kill. Imagine a whole generation of young soldiers coming home and trying to restart their lives after stopping Hitler. The trauma. Alcoholism, PTSD. The Hippis were these men’s children and they just did not understand. Today we know 2 out of 5 soldiers will commit suicide etc.. The Hippi Generation almost destroyed America by 1970 there was porn everywhere. Prostitution and Crime like never before. New York was a sespool.

I wonder what will be the images that will try to make sense of the 2010’s (begins with financial economic crisis, never ending wars of previous decade, climate change crisis events, the hold of social media, ends with political divisiveness and a pandemic). It’s for sure a curious decade to document.

  18. Jeremy on September 14, 2021 at 9:45 pm

REALLY tells you how repressive the 50’s were when someone singing a soft rock song is considered absolutely WILD.

Literally see teenagers today singing WAP, God bless the times we live in. Freedom is beautiful.

I would have hated it to be honest.

too many rules, too strict, structure over done. I would have rebelled too. Didn’t live through it but I can understand why the 1960s happened.

In the 60s it was Strom Thurmond, Jesse Helms. Today Graham, McConnell. Not the whole generation, just old white men, mad they’re old, dying, controlling the masses with power, money. You know, like religion

Incredible propoganda. Both the subject matter and the message behind this film. We are now, in 2021, beginning to see what communism in America really looks like. It’s much more insidious than even the paranoid propagandists predicted in the 50’s and 60’s. Now we see our schools are lost. Our universities are lost. The political and judicial systems are saturated with marxist globalists. The economy was and is owned and operated by the global elite banksters and the industrial military complex corporatocracy. Where do you think this is all going? Its GLOBAL communism cloaked in progressive socialism. The Great Reset. "You will own nothing and be happy". Woe to you o planet earth…

  29. Brad Thorson on September 14, 2021 at 9:54 pm

Everything changes all the time. Stability eventually gives way to chaos and chaos gives way to stability. We always rebel against the status quo, sooner or later.

Sigmund Freud had a lot to do with child-centered families, and why advertising and business fluorished in the post-war era. He enabled us to see the depth of why we did things, but that was too scary for many, which is why he’s been castigated by the feminist generation. Communists (in america called progressives or liberals) appreciate only the material. Religion, not mentioned in this film, was at the heart of how many families functioned then. Funny that Catcher in the Rye is now required reading in California high schools. Rock & Roll was new, but Jazz had the same effect in the 1930s on the previous generation. Benny Goodman’s 1938 concert at Carnegie Hall, with our parents dancing in the aisles was equally outrageous in its era as Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Elvis were in the 1950s. Rap in the 1980s produced an equal rebellion by our kids against us. Music reflects the times, and the times are always a’changin’.

  33. Andrea Lindley on September 14, 2021 at 10:04 pm

And now all these same people are conforming to the establishment faster then their parents did and with actual PROPAGANDA ON A DAILY BASIS thanks to the internet.

  34. Gabriel James on September 14, 2021 at 10:05 pm

The only thing the 60s produced was a generation of followers and conformers, followed and conformed to counter culture, then to religion or liberal commie academics laying the ground work for the couture that is destroying society. All the boomers wearing masks during COVID, you idiots never did learn to ask WHY in all your useless years. Thanks for fucking everything up

This show triggers me. The differences in our black lives now and then allows me to clearly see how the racist tyrant system has gotten better at their manipulative psychosociopathic treatments of us.
All the while claim we need to forget our past … Move on …. We lucky we live without the problems of yesterday.
    And the Almighty one …

I like to know who is pushing all the different narratives in our country because they’re still pushing it they’re still trying to divide us they’re still pushing communism we have not learned a damn thing from back then it’s so frustrating

  46. Levi Matthew on September 14, 2021 at 10:19 pm

Never mind that communism actually has been used to destroy freedom for millions and millions by the worst tyrannies around the world time and time again to this day.

    The Emmit till murderers ,
Were questioning the black man standing there by himself.
"We always took care of you haven’t we?"
    Under duress, black man answers…
" Yes sir you have. "
While smiling nervously, & looking down and away.

I couldn’t stop laughing at the atomic bomb suite for the kid. Kind of reminds me of what we are doing to the poor kids in school today with the masks and fear mongering they use to scare everyone. " Okay kids put on your masks or covid will get ya!" Wonder how they will look back at us in 70 or so years.
