Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is a heart rhythm disorder in which the heart beats irregularly. This condition may give rise to palpitations and present no symtoms at all. AF is the most common heart rhythm disorder. About 0.5% to 1 % of the Singapore population suffer from AF. Those above 40 years old have a 1 in 4 risk of developing AF. Risk increases with age, high blood pressure, heart failure/diseases, diabetes, high cholestrol and obesity . Atrail Fibrillation increases the risk of stroke 3 to 4 times. Irregular pumping of the heart leads to poor pumping of blood out of the upper chambers of the heart. Clots is thus formed. When the clots obstructs blood flow to the brain, strokes can happen.
