A Stroke Can Happen at Any Age: Alex’s Story

The International Alliance for Pediatric Stroke and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association are teaming up to spread pediatric stroke awareness. Watch Alex’s inspiring pediatric stroke story to learn more.

We encourage you to support this awareness campaign by sharing this video with your friends, family and colleagues. With your help we can reach our ultimate goal of increasing research to better understand how to recognize, diagnose and treat strokes in babies, children and the unborn.

Thank you for sharing your story. You are amazing Alex! My 16 y.o. son had a stroke last week. As with Alex, he had no previous risk factors. Extensive testing was done but no cause has been determined. A "very small" PFO was found in his heart. Otherwise, everything was found to be WNL. Has any cause been found as to why Alex has now suffered multiple strokes?

One of the major causes of stroke is dehydration. Lack of water (not juice, milk or coffee) can cause the blood to get thick, and the blood platelets stick together, just like water in a stream gets muddy when there is no rain and the water volume drops. Water volume in our blood drops, causing debris and sticky platelets to form clots. Aspirin and blood thinners do what good hydration does, and that is they thin the blood. Water has no side effects, and will keep the blood thinner and it will flow easier, just like the stream after a rain. A good book to read is "Your Body’s Many Cries for Water" by Dr. Batmanghelidj. Amazon should have it.

I have had one of the most stressful weeks of my life and had a major stroke during an emotional breakdown I was sore all over arms and legs were weak and feel like I was hit in head with a bat I’m stubborn but after watching this I need to schedule an M.R.I. I’m only 40 and don’t want to have it happen again.
